My hand-painted butterfly wing collection was inspired by a disease called lupus. The butterfly is used by The Lupus Foundation as a symbol of hope. The butterfly is also used because of "the butterfly rash" most commonly asscciated with discoid lupus, the type of lupus that affects your largest organ, your skin. The other type of lupus is systemic lupus, SLE, which affects many of your internal organs once it has progressed, like your liver, kidneys, heart, lungs, and brain. I was dignosed with mild systemic lupus about 5 years ago. There is currently no cure for this disease. To find out more about this disease, the symptoms, and treatments, or for what you can do, please visit The Lupus Foundation's website at www.lupus.org.
I hope you are inspired by these pieces that have such a personal meaning to me. Each wing is painted by hand on lighweight wood pieces of different shapes and sizes. Each is a wearable art piece and modeled after the beautiful patterns of various butterfly species.
